"When told that Dean had acted to block a medical marijuana bill in Vermont last year, 28 percent said they would be less likely to vote for him in the Democratic presidential primary, while only 10 percent said they would be more likely to support Dean. Asked whether they agree more with Dean's position on medical marijuana or with that of medical marijuana supporters, only 15 percent backed Dean's claim that marijuana is not an effective medicine. Seventy-four percent said they agreed with medical marijuana supporters that marijuana is an effective medicine and that 'we shouldn't be arresting people for the simple act of taking their medicine.'" - Zogby Poll of New Hampshire Primary Voters, Aug 27, 2003.

When asked "As president, would you stop arresting [medical marijuana] patients?" Edwards responded, "I think the simple way to do this is for the President of the United States to set up this commission, give them a short deadline and, assuming their recommendation makes medical sense, to follow what their recommendation is." Then when asked "What happens in that time, while this study is going on?" Edwards responded, "I don't think you can say to people who work for you `no, ignore violations of the law.' I think that's irresponsible for the president to do. ... [I]t is what I believe is the right answer right now," Then asked, "Even though it's legal in [some] states?" Edwards replied, "My basic view is ... I believe this is the right way to deal with this." - Town Hall meeting at Salem Middle School, Salem, NH, Aug 22, 2003
"Repeated efforts by U.S. Sen. John Edwards (D-NC) and his campaign staff to block peaceful protesters from expressing their views during campaign events in public spaces cast doubt upon his commitment to civil liberties, members of Granite Staters for Medical Marijuana (GSMM) said today. At a town hall meeting in Keene Central Square Park in Keene, New Hampshire, five GSMM members tried to enter the public park with signs protesting Edwards' position favoring the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA's) raids on medical marijuana patients in states that protect patients from arrest. Several campaign staff members stopped them. When a campaign worker said, "We'll not allow you in with the signs ... this is our park," GSMM Campaign Coordinator Aaron Houston replied, "We have the right to be here..." - Aug 26, 2003.

When asked "On the day you take the oath of office, would you put an immediate end to the DEA [Drug Enforcement Administration] raids on seriously ill people in the states where medical marijuana is allowed?" Graham said, "There are several things I intend to do shortly after I take the oath of office, one of which is to remove John Ashcroft as attorney general. ... Give me a few more hours before I get around to that specific DEA issue." Graham continued, "I don't think the scientific evidence is there today to justify it, plus ... I think it would be very difficult to enforce your drug laws if you had such a big exception to them."

When asked "On the day you take office, will you stop the DEA [medical marijuana] raids?" Kerry then offered to "clarify" his earlier remarks, saying, "My personal disposition is open to the issue of medical marijuana. I believe there is a study underway analyzing what the science is. I want to get that scientific review," before making any decisions. He said he would "put a moratorium on the raids" pending this review but would not commit to any long-term action to protect patients from arrest. - Manchester, NH, Aug 6, 2003.

"It's not even a question, if someone needs it [medical marijuana]." Kucinich then left the podium and stepped toward a teary-eyed Macia to hug her. "How are you doing?" Kucinich asked. Macia responded, "I'm in a lot of pain." When Kucinich returned to the podium, he said, "Thank you, Linda. ... In my administration, you're going to get the help you need." - Manchester, NH, Aug 12, 2003.
